Summer Jam Staff
This role is for someone with abundant energy and a contagious enthusiasm for working with youth; for someone who has experience enjoying life with young people and who is excited to contribute to the planning and ongoing creation of our program. Every day of the summer program, we will meet as a group to decide how we’d like to spend our time, so you will need to be a dedicated listener, a compassionate facilitator, and an eager participant in our group process.
Our camp provides a safe and supportive environment in which a group of 18 participants, ages 7-11, meets from Monday to Friday to pursue activities that interest them, and to strengthen their sense of self and community.
Job Description:
- Initiating, organizing and facilitating group activities such as: art, music, theatre, creative play, awareness-building activities, group-bonding activities, skill-building activities, visualization and relaxation practices, connecting with our community and natural environment, etc.
- Facilitating/collaborating on activities that participants choose to pursue
- Creating an atmosphere of cooperation and respect
- Conflict resolution (one-on-one discussion and facilitating group reconciliation)
- Addressing social pressures arising in the group
- Having fun
- Role modeling clear communication, emotional awareness, authenticity, compassion, empathy, and healthy lifestyle choices
- Ensuring group safety at the camp centre and on field trips
- Participating in program development and in daily staff meetings
Skills that will serve you in this position include:
- Keen self-awareness

- Experience with conflict-resolution and peace-making processes
- A confidence in the ability of young people to know what is best for them and to know how these things are best accomplished
- An understanding of child and adolescent psychology

- Strong leadership skills, ability to think independently and to take initiative
- Love of laughter
- Passion for making music, creating skits, storytelling, making art, making a fool of yourself, playing games, and living new experiences
- Familiarity with Vancouver, and with opportunities for our participants to deepen their relationships with the local environment and culture

Employment details:
Your contract begins in June, 2008 with weekly staff training sessions. The camp begins on July 2, and runs until August 15. We are also looking for one male staff member for FIRST SESSION ONLY, July 2 to July 18. The camp will be based in the Wondertree Learning Centre in the Jericho Hill Centre, across from Jericho Park and Beach in Point Grey.
Hours: 9am to 5:00pm, four days per week. This time includes 1 hour of staff meeting time per day.
